Gravity Union started with a simple idea: Compliance work could be done better. With more care, more curiosity and more integrity. And here we are, ten years later, with a reputation across North America for thoughtful work in compliance, collaboration, AI, and digital transformation.

But the real story of GU has always been the people.

As a fun way to celebrate this milestone, we chatted with ten team members (although there are many more!) who helped get us to where we’re at today.

Michael

“The whole team built Gravity Union!”

As the CEO and founder, Michael knows this first-hand: Starting a company is never easy. But even in the early days when handing out business cards felt more like a lemonade stand than a corporation, he had a clear goal: Build a consultancy rooted in relationships, meaningful work, and real impact.

‍“You never know how big and fast a company will grow. It’s amazing to step back sometimes and see the growth that the whole team built together and the impact we’re making in the market.”

It was a real “we can do this” moment that helped shape our identity!

Mami

She may be on her second maternity leave, but her impact as Vice President still shows in how we carry our culture forward.

Mami recalls coordinating an intense and highly structured schedule for a very large SharePoint Online implementation. Working across time zones (she was in Toronto, Michael in Vancouver, and the client on the eastern edge of Newfoundland), she mapped every 30 minutes of the day starting at 5am. It was a challenge that required patience and collaboration and a lot of caffeine!

But her favourite memory still makes everyone laugh: Coordinating GU’s first photoshoot in an office that didn’t allow dogs, with a photographer that was unknowingly allergic, lots of barking, a noise complaint, an angry security visit—but great photos!

These moments reflect Mami’s role at Gravity Union: Steady in complexity, light-hearted when it counts, and always grounded in the people behind the work.

Ash

Officially our Regional Director in Western Canada but unofficially the life of the office party!

Naturally, a friendly debate with Michael about metadata led Ash to Gravity Union.

In the early days, everyone wore multiple hats and learning as you went was a core part of the culture. And even as GU evolved, Ash says that the fun, curiosity, and learning oriented atmosphere never disappeared.

Something he credits this to is the intentional focus on hiring people who are a strong cultural fit—on top of being technically skilled.

His favourite memory: When new hires first joined, they were welcomed with a slingshot monkey toy. And it screams when you “shoot” it! A fun quirk to remind us that even as the company grows, it remains human.

Jas

As our Director of Technology Strategy, she’s the expert voice behind many of our blogs and webinars.

Jas is another tenured member of the team who knew Michael in a previous life. When she started Gravity Union, she used her knowledge from her past role at Microsoft to help lay our brand and marketing foundations. You wouldn’t be reading this if it wasn’t for all her early work!

Jas carries a lesson she believes every consultant (especially newer team members) should hold onto—listening. “It is an underrated skill and often harder than speaking. But listening well is what leads to better questions, clearer understanding, and stronger relationships.”

Her favourite memory: Living and working from the east coast, every in-person moment with the Vancouver team feels special to her.

Ray

At a striking 6 feet and 7 inches tall, everyone is surprised with they meet our Senior Architect in person!

Ray has been around since day one. What started as a friendly dinner with Michael turned into two technologists talking shop and taking a chance on each other. Ray has seen the company evolve in size, structure, scope—but one thing has remained the same: Our commitment to do right by the client.

His favourite memory: Watching internal events grow into full family gatherings. From inviting spouses to having kids play outside, Gravity Union goes beyond just the work.

Giselle

Long-time client champion, Project Manager, and always bringing joy to calls.

One lesson that has always stood out for Giselle: A supportive team makes all the difference. As a PM, she values clear communication, knowing it can be the deciding factor between a project’s success or failure. And bonus points for always making her clients laugh!

Her favourite memory starts on a hotel rooftop and ends with a noise complaint! And in-between there was Backstreet Boys karaoke and a room full of people singing with far more enthusiasm than accuracy. The 2023 holiday party is still tough to beat!

Dylan

He first joined as a PM in 2018, came back part‑time in early 2026, and now returns as our Director of Delivery. The title may have changed, but the reason he came back didn't—**it’s the people.**

Dylan’s path to Gravity Union isn’t a straight line. But who’s is? 😅

👋 He was first introduced through consulting work at another organization…
➡️ A recommendation led him to join GU as a Project Manager
🌍 He then stepped into independent consulting
🔄 And now he’s back in a full-time capacity!

His perspective is especially valuable because he's seen both the early days and where the company is now. “What strikes me is how much feels the same and how much has evolved. The processes that worked back then are still here—they've just matured and become more sophisticated as the business grows.”

His favourite memory: Finishing a multi-year effort for a large-scale regulated organization in the province. Finally!

Diana

Arguably the most interesting person at the company: Analyst, Restaurateur, Yukon-resident 👀

Diana got a front-row seat to the company before she even worked here—as a client!

She must have liked what she saw, because in 2018 she joined the team as one of our earliest hires. Years later, she's still here, which says a lot.

Favourite memory? The scrappy, early days of shared lunches, big ideas, and the kind of spontaneous collaboration that happened when everyone was under one roof. Those early relationships helped shape the internal culture we still have today.

Michael M

“I made the jump and never looked back!” Wise words from this Digital Transformation Analyst.

Michael laughs, telling us about his first few days, “While the rest of the team was out meeting with clients, I had the office all to myself—working my way through two onboarding books.” While it was an unconventional approach, it represented GU’s core values of prioritizing the client, encouraging autonomy, and having total trust in a new team member.

His favourite memory: One of the in-office Christmas gatherings, packed with people. It was a moment that really showed just how much GU had grown since he first joined!

Brian

Full-time Director of AI and part-time curator of our cozy and stylish Gastown office.

How's this for a plot twist? Brian used to be Michael's boss! 👀

Brian describes his first year at Gravity Union as interesting, welcoming, and surprisingly home-like.

A few memorable moments stand out:
